Pastor
Rev. Dr. Bob Jack
Bob
Jack is my name, and ministry is my "game." I say "game"
in a positive way, since I enjoy what I do so much that it really
doesn't seem like a job. It is fun, and exciting, and a true calling
from God. And it means spending a lot of time in prayer, preparation
for worship, pastoral care and visitation, and planning for events
way in advance. I love it!

I
grew up in Boston (Go Red Sox!), and have been known to "pahk
my cah" in some pretty outrageous places. (In Boston, driving
is an adventuresome sport, not for the faint of heart, where GREEN
means GO and YELLOW means GO FASTER!). I was baptized and raised
a Presbyterian, made a personal decision for Jesus Christ when
I was 16, and found my way (after an appointment to the Naval
Academy and a four year degree from Eastern Nazarene College)
to Princeton, where I studied for the ministry.
I frequently
answer to the title of husband, father, grandfather - and a few
more that may not be worth printing. But mostly, I answer to God,
and to my wonderful wife, Carol. She and I love to travel, participate
in the Walk to Emmaus (see more on this below), and be with our
kids and grandkids. Personally, I enjoy reading in many and various
areas of interest, listening to and making music, taking long energetic
walks, and recreational target shooting. God is good!

Director
of Christian Education
Nancy Nutter,
DCE
Hello, my name is Nancy Nutter and I am the Christian Educator at
Pleasant Hill. I have been working in this position, since February
2001. I have been a life-long member of Pleasant Hill. I received
my Master's in Christian Education from Pfeiffer University in August
2004.
|
|
I
met my husband at UNC-Chapel Hill, where I received my BA and we
were married in August 1986. We have 2 children, Elizabeth, who
is in College and Zachary, who is in High School. We love vacationing
together at the beach or camping in the mountains with family. We
have one cat named Rosie and a dog named Jackie.
I
love my job because I work with children of all ages. The CE Dept
works with members of our congregation to create an environment
of learning and fun with our programs. Sharing God's message of
Hope through his son, Jesus Christ, is our goal here at Pleasant
Hill. We want to be living disciples to our community, family and
friends. Come and see what the Lord has done. Visit us! We would
love to see you!

Administrative
Assistant
Rhonda Cantelmo
My name is Rhonda Cantelmo, and I am the Administrative Assistant
here at Pleasant Hill. I have been in this position since 2007. My
husband, Rick
and I have one daughter Joely who is a freshman in high school. We
live in Fort Mill where we are busy taking care of our yard and our
dog, August. |
|
I not
only work at Pleasant Hill but I also worship here. We began attending
after enrolling Joely in the Preschool when she was just a year
old. So she has really grown up in the church. Since
my husband & I are not originally from Charlotte I love having
a church family that we can fellowship with and be an active participant
in being the hands and feet of Christ. Come and see all that we
are doing here at PHPC!

Choir
Director
Jennifer Tankersley
Hello, my name is Jennifer Tankersley, originally from Nashville TN.
I have been in the Entertainment industry performing around the country
and abroad for over twenty years working in a variety of venues such
as regional theater, cruise ships, theme parks, dinner theaters and
summer stock. |
| My
last job as a performer was in East Tennessee as a singer in the Louise
Mandrell Show. In recent years I have changed my focus from being
on stage to teaching music, drama, and dance. I have taught a variety
of ages from preschoolers to adults. I have a passion and love for
music and the arts in general, but my love for the Lord is what makes
me truly happy. I feel extremely blessed to be able to combine the
two as the director of music at Pleasant Hill. |

Bookkeeper
Rachael
Thompson
My name is Rachael Thompson, and I am the bookkeeper here at Pleasant
Hill. I have been in this position since October 2004 and really enjoy
what I do.
|
I started attending Pleasant Hill in the fall of 1988, when my would-be
husband and I started dating. We were married here in 1989, and I
became a member during the ceremony to baptize our twin daughters,
Amber & Katie, in 1994. In 1996 we had another daughter, Hannah.
Since coming to Pleasant Hill, my relationship with God has grown
immensely.
I love working here because, not only do I enjoy this type of work,
I love seeing all that happens in the church during the week. You
would think it was nice and quiet. Not at all, as there are folks
in and out of this place all the time, and I love to visit with them
(when I'm not working, of course!). I especially like seeing the seniors
that come for lunch and the children that attend the Preschool. I
look forward to seeing you here, too!
Along
with raising our daughters, I enjoy scrapbooking, camping and reading.

Our
History
In the southwest portion of Mecklenburg County, on the Charlotte-York
Highway stands Pleasant Hill Presbyterian Church.
The
history of Pleasant Hill began in 1836 when the Rev. Samuel L. Watson
pastor of Steele Creek Presbyterian Church, realized that the members
living in the lower section of his pastorate found it almost impossible
to regularly attend services at Steele Creek, due to distance and impassable
roads. He received permission from Concord Presbytery to organize this
group into a separate church to be known as Pleasant Hill Presbyterian
Church. The church was organized on November 15, 1836, consisting of forty-two
members.
Mr.
Alpheus S. King, a charter member, gave nine acres of land to the church
as a building site, and the members soon completed building their first
house of worship, a modest white frame building in the architectural style
of that day. It was dedicated on June 4, 1837.
Pleasant
Hill and Steele Creek, the mother church, remained under the same pastoral
charge for forty-three years and Pleasant Hill continued to share pastors
with other churches until 1956. The longest pastoral grouping was with
Central Steele Creek Presbyterian Church which began in 1911 and continued
until 1956, and the longest pastorate during this time was that of Rev.
Dr. R.A. Young, who served from 1932 to 1956.
On
June 11, 1905, the second house of worship was dedicated. Like its predecessor,
it was a modest and unpretentious building which stood until 1972 when
it was demolished to make way for a new and modern church.
In
1944 as membership increased and the programs expanded, a small education
building was erected, and in 1953 a larger education building with a fellowship
hall was added. This building was demolished in 1996 after a new education
building was erected on the left side of the present sanctuary.
On
May 13, 1956, the congregation voted to become an independent church.
This was the first time in its one hundred twenty year history that it
had attempted to stand alone and have a full time pastor. The church then
built a manse and called a minister.
Beginning
in 1969, under the leadership of Rev. Roy Coker, the church began the
most ambitious building program in its history. It included a sanctuary,
a remodeled education building, and a recreational area on nearby property.
The new third house of worship was dedicated on November 11, 1973.
The
next phase of the building program, which began in 1986, was for the addition
of a new education building. It included a modern kitchen, multipurpose
room and classrooms. This building was dedicated in 1989.
Pleasant
Hill continues to grow in the knowledge and love of God and to serve Jesus
Christ as Lord in whatever ministries are open to us in the community
and throughout the world. The present minister, Rev. Robert Jack, became
pastor of Pleasant Hill in November, 1985.
In
2008, after nearly a decade of praying, planning, and pledging of financial
support, PHPC was blessed by God with the addition of two new buildings
on our spacious campus: The Choate Administration Building provides additional
office space and educational classrooms to facilitate the growth and range
of our programming; and the Knox Worship Center expands our gathering
space on Sunday to allow for 475 seats in a lovely, state-of-the-art sanctuary.
Through the generosity of our members, these buildings were 80% paid for
on the day of their dedication.
